Bio-Plus
Strategies International (BIOPSTRA) is a not for profit private
company registered in Kampala, Uganda with the focus on
consultancy and management service in technology prospecting,
selection, prioritizing, accessing, transfer, incubation and
business development. The immediate focus of BIOPSTRA will be
agriculture and agro-industrial technologies and innovations.
BIOPSTRA
plans to serve as a bridge between the private and public sector
development and helping research results transformed into
business opportunities. BIOPSTRA will prospect, select and
prioritize appropriate technologies at national, regional and
international levels. It will also determine freely accessible
public and private technologies and proprietary technologies.
BIOPSTRA
will help facilitating local, regional and international
partnership building processes. Furthermore, in the long term,
BIOPSTRA will build institutions that will serve as technology
and business incubation facilities. BIOPSTRA believes that these
are the key missing links to trigger dynamic economic
development in the African continent. Most of the existing
regional technology platforms were created by external forces
and lack full ownership and emotional attachment to the
problems. They fully depend on the external donor funding which
is in many cases attached to specific interests and above all
they lack full partnership recognition.
BIOPSTRA is
conceived by four senior Africans (one Ethiopian and three
Ugandans) with the deep knowledge of Africa’s problem and the
right solutions to the problems. BIOPSTRA therefore believes to
offer very unique solutions to deep seated Africa’s development
problems. The main motive is therefore Africa’s development
problems should be and can be solved by Africans. However this
does not mean that everything shall be exclusively done by
Africans. BIOPSTRA is fully aware of the fact that Africa is
part of the global economy and therefore local, regional and
international partnership building is a key component in the
whole process.
BIOPSTRA
will link up with the existing regional development efforts and
support partnership building activities at different levels of
the hierarchy to build synergies.
In terms of
management, BIOPSTRA will have an international advisory board,
executive director and portfolio directors.
BIOPSTRA
will develop core technology transfer and business development
projects, raise funds and look for partners to assist at its
startup phase and plan to sustain its business activities
through revenues received from its goods and services. The
guiding principle of BIOPSTRA is building a self sustaining
system and minimizing direct external financial support. It
believes that this can be achieved through sustainable
development programs which must involve service providers and
service buyers.
